Fire hd 8 kids edition12/31/2023 After three days, the battery was drained completely. We recently went through an unusually social weekend where I let her play on the Fire for an hour or two during dinner every night. The battery life was noticeably shorter on this edition. It took the full six hours to charge the battery from 0 percent, which is painfully slow when you’re traveling and you need just enough juice to make it one more hour on this flight. But at under 20 ounces, it’s still small enough for a toddler to hold comfortably in her lap. Unlike the Fire HD 8, it comes in a puffy protective case that increases the tablet’s total dimensions to 9.6 inches wide and 6.1 inches tall. Am I, her parent, willing to pay a little more for convenience and a little more peace and quiet? Does James Brown like to get down? Obviously, yes.Īs with the new Fire HD 8 and last year’s Fire HD 8 Kids, this new kid’s edition is a small tablet, with a plastic body and glass screen. Then I had to wipe yogurt fingerprints off the screen. To write this review, I had to dig out the tester from the closet, where I hide it when she’s at home. And finally, yes, I don’t think this year’s minimal changes add very much to the user’s experience.īut the user in this house is a three-year-old. Yes, you can get the new Fire HD 8 for a little cheaper. Those same features are also all included with this year’s edition: You get a two-year worry-free replacement guarantee a protective foam case and a year’s subscription to FreeTime Unlimited, Amazon’s kid’s content platform that lets you filter the books, apps, and movies that your kid can access through the parent dashboard.Īnd yes, an older kid might wonder why you get to slide your hands over the cool, smooth, aluminum-and-glass exterior of an iPad, while they’re stuck with the much cheaper plastic Fire. Last year, I noted that with the Fire HD 8 Kids, the price covered many features in addition to the actual hardware. As with any parenting debate, both answers are fine. The Amazon Fire Kids? Or a kidproofed iPad Mini? Now we all argue over which device to use to distract our kids on painful long plane rides, or the (very) occasional dinner out. They're also robust and colourful, qualities that come into their own on the Kids Editions, both of which are also regularly updated. In families with kids who are my daughter’s age, the great debates are no longer over breast over bottle, or daycare versus nanny. While nobody is going to accuse Fire tablets of being at the cutting edge of processing power or beautiful design, they are more than adequate for practically all standard tablet tasks, easy to grip and manoeuvre, and dirt cheap at under £50 and under £80 respectively for the 7-inch and 8-inch models.Īlthough the screen resolutions are not changed from the older models, contrast has been boosted to make ebooks easier to read and video to ping a bit more. Pleasingly, Alexa is also available on previous generation Fires (as the 7-inch one used to be called), and the HD 8 and HD 10 (opens in new tab) tablets via a free software update. In fact, presumably Amazon won't roll out most of the core Show functionality to Fire tablets, because if they did, why would you bother buying a Show?įrom what we've seen of it, the integration with general tablet activities is very slick, letting you dismiss Alexa, but then call it back via a pull-down menu, when you realise you've forgotten what it said about the weather, or what the tune stuck in your head is.Īlexa's music and news feeds can play in the background as you do other tablet-related stuff, and all the usual support for a wide range of smart home kit is present and correct, for your lightbulb-dimming and thermostat fiddling pleasure. What it doesn't do, that the Show does, is let you make video calls or check in on elderly relatives (although since the calling service hasn't even launched in the UK yet, that's arguably a moot point). Just like the Echo Show smart displays, the Fire tablets add a visual element to certain replies, with a week's worth of weather highlights appearing on screen, for instance. Once enabled, you can ask Alexa for the weather, sports scores, news and much, much more. On the latest Fire tablet models, you can have hands-free access to Alexa ("hey Alexa"), but you need to enable the feature in the device settings. Unlike the Echo devices, but like Amazon's Fire TV media streamer line, Alexa on the Fire tablets is activated with a button press by default. What the latest Amazon Fire tablets can do
